The cultural target, and what it is actually worth

₹1 crore is the most searched financial goal in India, and it is worth separating the number from the aspiration behind it.

The number is reachable on an ordinary salary: ₹10,009 a month for 20 years at 12%, or ₹5,270 for 25. Compounding supplies 84% of it over the longer term.

The aspiration is where it gets slippery. "Crorepati" carries the sense of being wealthy, and ₹1 crore twenty years from now will not mean what it means today. At 6% inflation it buys about ₹31.18 L of today's goods — comfortable, not wealthy.

Two ways to respond, and only one of them is useful. The unhelpful one is to treat this as a reason the goal is pointless. The useful one is to notice that the target should be defined in purchasing power, not rupees. If you want today's ₹1 crore of comfort in twenty years, aim at ₹3.21 Cr — which needs ₹32,099 a month rather than ₹10,009.

That larger figure is the honest one. The crorepati calculator lets you toggle between the two.

Monthly SIP needed for ₹1 crore

The fourth column is the share of the target supplied by compounding rather than by you — which is the strongest argument for a longer term.
