A first real goal

₹10 lakh is usually the first target that is neither trivial nor abstract — a car, a wedding contribution, a deposit, a properly funded emergency corpus.

It is also small enough that the horizon decides which instrument you should use, and the table below is misleading if you skip that step. Over 15 years, ₹1,982 a month at 12% gets there. Over 3 years you would need ₹22,984 a month — and at a 3-year horizon you should not be assuming 12% at all. At a more honest 7%, the figure is ₹24,899.

So: if ₹10 lakh is a near-term goal, plan it as a savings problem with a deposit or short-duration debt fund. If it is genuinely ten years out, equity is appropriate and the table applies.

One inflation note, because it is small enough to be forgotten: ₹10 lakh in 15 years buys about ₹4.17 L of today's goods. If the goal is a specific thing whose price rises, aim higher.

Monthly SIP needed for ₹10 lakh

The fourth column is the share of the target supplied by compounding rather than by you — which is the strongest argument for a longer term.

Questions people actually ask

How much SIP do I need for ₹10 lakh in 10 years?

About ₹4,304 a month at 12% a year. Over 15 years it drops to ₹1,982, and over 20 to ₹1,001 — 77% less for doubling the time.

Will ₹10 lakh be enough by then?

In purchasing power, no — not if you mean ₹10 lakh as it feels today. At 6% inflation, ₹10 lakh in 20 years buys about ₹3.12 L of today's goods.

To target ₹10 lakh of today's value, set the inflation field above to 6%. The required instalment rises to ₹4,750 a month over 15 years.

Can I reach ₹10 lakh with a one-time investment instead?

Yes, and it takes less total money because it compounds for the whole period: ₹1,82,696 invested today reaches ₹10 lakh in 15 years at 12%.

The table above shows the one-time figure for every term. The lump sum calculator works it the other way round.
